St Martin’s, Rochdale
ANTHONY GRIMSHAW ASSOCIATES

'New sanctuary furniture has been made in oak and brushed stainless steel.  The design is based on the fluted mouldings of Gothic columns.'

Sanctuary furniture supplied by Treske completed the restoration by RIBA conservation architects Anthony Grimshaw Associates of the once derelict St Martin’s Church.

An altar with 50mm thick solid top, celebrants’ chairs, lectern, credence shelf, cross, candlesticks, hymn board, kneelers, Aumbry and altar rails were all made in oak. Treske’s successful handling of the combination of wood, stainless steel and glass, is evident in the fine detail of the graceful altar rail.

Linking the new with the old, the profile of one of the stone pillars in the church inspired the columnar forms that support the furniture. The design, materials and forms share the same qualities of simplicity, strength and grace found within the simple space of this now revitalized church.
